The
Food Project - Boston & Lincoln, MA
On 21 acres of conservation land in Lincoln,
MA, and 2 acres of reclaimed lots in inner-city Boston, this organization
raises an estimated 150,000 pounds of organic produce annually, which it
distributes to food banks, soup kitchens and homeless shelters as well as
through low-cost inner-city farmers markets and a CSA. But even more important
than these tangible results is the educational process through which they
are achieved. Each year the Food Project's programs involve 100 young people
from the greater Boston area - both urban and suburban - in growing and
distributing food, while receiving leadership and job-skill training, environmental
education, and training in various aspects of personal development and community
service. With these expanding programs, the organization had badly outgrown
its limited office space, and turned to Equity Trust for financing to buy
a building in downtown Lincoln. The ETF responded with the largest loan
it has made to date
