Equity Trust Fund Borrower Projects Just Food New York City, NY
Just
Food is using food as the link to connect low-income New Yorkers with small
farmers. The organization works with community gardeners to help them market
what they are growing: organic produce, and herbs like Papolo and spearmint.
They are establishing urban farm-stands at four community garden sites,
three in the Bronx, and one in Brooklyn. Just Food also brings together farmers and urban families to organize Community Supported Agriculture projects (CSAs), especially in low-income neighborhoods. The CSAs connect growers with consumers in particular neighborhoods. With no advertising or middlemen, CSA farms can often provide organic fruits and vegetables to families for less than a supermarket, while still giving the small farmer a living wage. Just Food also subsidizes share costs for very low-income families.
